Young Authors: Columbia College Chicago (November 21st-Submission opens
http://www.colum.edu/Academics/Fiction_Writing/YA/
The Columbia College Chicago Fiction Writing Department holds a YOUNG AUTHORS writing competition every year. They are always looking for fiction writing, creative nonfiction writing, and short plays.
A festival will be helpd at the end of April.
-We missed this competition, but we hope to be a major threat next year.
Descriptive Sketch-The purpose of a descriptive sketch is to describe a number of details in a specific scene.
Carnival Prompt
Imagine that you are at a carnival and you see a strange man disappear through a door that somehow wasn’t there a minute before. You decide to open the door and follow him. What happens next?
Remember our goal: “Be descriptive, and be new.” I want you to use dialogue, the 5 sense, make the scene come to life, and make your writing different than anything we’ve seen before.
What should I describe: The man, the door, the carnival (rides, people, parking lot, the bearded lady, etc.), what's on the other side of the door.
Keys: The man is described as strange, but what is strange to you might be normal for someone else. Also, my image of a door might be different than yours. Likewise, my image of a carnival (smells, sights, rides, people, mood) might be very much different than yours is.
Best of luck
